Repairing the Tires on Your Vehicle

Even though most people know the importance of general vehicle maintenance, they still miss checking their tires until one goes flat. During winter, tires take a beating from potholes, bumpy, and icy roads. It is very important to have your tires inspected to see if they need repair or replacement in the spring. If they are in good condition you can be assured to have safe spring travels. It is important to check tires before each trip to make sure they are at least inflated. A complete inspection includes checking tire pressure, tread, and wear pattern. If the inflation is low, it may be due to a puncture in the tire. Make sure to bring the vehicle in so we can inspect them for you.

Know if the Tires should be Repaired or Replaced

Repairing a tire is great because it can be completed for a fraction of the cost to replace one. Even though there is financial savings in repair, it is not always the best choice. To determine if a repair is possible, you need to take a look at where the puncture area is. Only punctures in the tread area should be repaired. If a repair is beyond the tread area or on the sidewall then the tire should be replaced. For safety sake, do not make or allow a repair to those areas. The size of the repair is also important. Damage from a puncture should not be more than ¼ inch in diameter; otherwise it is unsafe to complete the repair. Do not get a tire repaired if the treads are less than one sixteenth of an inch. There is no sense in repairing a tire that should not be on the road in the first place. If the treads are less than 1/16 inch, then the tire is not safe for road use.

Proper Tire Repair should be Done

Make sure that the professional repairing your damaged automobile tire removes the tire from the rim in order to properly complete the repair. Proper repairs require both a plug and a patch to the damaged area. A patch cannot be applied if the tire is not removed from the rim. During a proper repair, a plug is inserted to fill the puncture and then a patch is applied to the inner liner to prevent air loss. Additionally, the inner liner should be thoroughly inspected for damage that may not be visible from the outside. Do not overlap repairs. If a new puncture is in the same place as an existing repair then the tire should be replaced.

Have a Tire Repair Kit

Tire repair kits are available in most auto parts stores. There are two types of kits: tire plugs and tire patches. Each type offers an assortment that range from professional grade to consumer grade. Some professional grade kits are able to repair holes in the shoulder and the crown of the tire. The problem with repair kits is that they are very temporary, allowing you just enough time to make it to a mechanic for a professional tire repair. When it comes to your safety, your passengers and others on the road, you do not want to cut corners or take shortcuts.

Screeching Noises from the Brakes

There are some noises you should be aware of. If there is a screeching or squealing noise, it could indicate that the brakes are starting to fail on your vehicle. The brake pads eventually wear down on the vehicle. As this happens, it will also cause it to have direct contact with the brake rotors. Over time, the metal on metal friction will cause the brake rotors to start to warp. It will also result in the break rotors wearing faster. This can lead to expensive repair bill when it comes time to have them fixed. If you notice any odd noise when you apply the brakes of your vehicle, make sure to bring it in as soon as possible. You may also notice an issue with the brakes if the brake pedal is out of the norm as well. If the brake pedal is too soft or too hard, it could mean an issue to the brakes or brake line.

Noises from the Engine of the Vehicle

Besides noticing any noises from the brakes, also be aware of noises from the engine. If there is a grinding or screeching noise, make sure to schedule an appointment as soon as you can. It could be caused from the radiator, engine, or even the belts on the vehicle. Over time, these will wear and need to be replaced. Having regular maintenance done can help improve the efficiency and reliability of the vehicle when you drive it. By bringing the vehicle in at the first sign of an issue, you can help reduce time, money, and stress in the long run. The engine is an important, so make sure that it is properly maintained.

No Matter What Noise you Hear, bring the Vehicle In

When you drive the vehicle, always keep your eyes and ears open. If you see, hear, or even smell anything out of the norm, it could indicate the start of an issue. Make sure to schedule an appointment so we can inspect the vehicle for you. Take note of what you were doing and what the noise sounded like. This can help us to locate the start of the issue with your vehicle. Keeping the vehicle maintained can help you to have a safe and reliable ride when you need to drive it.

Why Flat Spots can Damage the Tires

When you check the tires on the vehicle, make sure to check them regularly. This will include the regular tires plus the spare tire. If you notice a disturbance or shimmy in how the vehicle is handling, make sure to bring the vehicle in as soon as you can.

Tires are Affected By the Temperature

The tires are also affected by temperature. When it is cooler out, they will lose pressure. If it is warmer, the air pressure will actually expand. Make sure the vehicle has been at rest for awhile before you check the air pressure in them. Also we can inspect the air pressure and let you know what the correct amount is.

How long a Flat Spot Lasts

A flat spot is a tire that is no longer perfectly round. This can occur if the vehicle has sat in one spot for a long length of time. This will end up damaging the tires, while also causing other parts to have issues. Some things could rust or have corrosion on them. When a vehicle is not used on a regular basis, it will lead to issues in the long run. Also resulting in an unreliable vehicle.

Minimizing the Damage to the Tires

When storing a vehicle for more than a few weeks, it is best to drive the vehicle until it is thoroughly warmed up and then immediately put it up on blocks after arriving at the storage location. Doing this takes the load off of the tires completely. Having the tires perfectly round is important.

What to do if your vehicle breaks down

While driving, you will want to keep your vehicle working properly and efficiently. This will require you to go to regularly scheduled maintenances. We can inspect the parts and components of your vehicle and help to make sure they are working efficiently and at top performance levels when you drive. If a part fails and it is ignored, you could end up doing more damage in the future because the worn part will cause other components to fail. It may also result in a costly repair bill. There are some important safety tips that you should consider in order to keep the vehicle running at top performance levels.

Move off to the Side of the Road

If it is safe to do so, move your vehicle off the road. This ensures that there is a steady stream of traffic that still able to flow. So, while your car may have broken down, it may not be the end of the road. Make sure that you cruise into a safe spot, off the road. Ideally, head for a side street and park it somewhere. That way, you can ensure that you are safe and not causing pile-ups. After all, your vehicle needs to be put in a safe spot. Make sure that you put the hazards on to alert others of what you are doing.

Make People Aware of the Vehicle Breakdown

When you pull your vehicle over, make sure to put the hazard lights on. Sometimes the other drivers might not notice them, so it is a good idea to also lift the hood of your vehicle. That way, the other drivers will know your cannot move your vehicle. This can help to avoid people sitting behind you honking or waiting for you to move. Giving people a visual perspective of your breakdown is important. That way, they can drive around you. Ultimately, this ensures everyone’s safety on the roads.

Stay With Your Vehicle

While it may be tempting to abandon your vehicle where it is, that is not the required protocol. You need to stay with your vehicle until the tow truck arrives. But, you also need to make sure that you are preventing injuries to passersby. As a general rule of thumb, a mechanic or roadside assistance company will not assist the vehicle if the driver is not present. But, you also need to make sure that others are not in danger as a result of the breakdown. While not every breakdown is the same, it is always best to use your head. If the vehicle is smoking furiously, step away from it. But, there may be other deeper problems that you cannot see. Make sure that you are in a good place to remain safe and wait for the experts to arrive. Of course, using common sense is must. Make sure that the tire has not blown or has been damaged. Assessing the situation is important so that the problem can be fixed quickly.

Know what the Diagnostic Codes are

These codes point to an issue with your vehicle. The issue with these codes is the sheer number of them that are programmed into the vehicle’s memory. Auto repair can be made easy, but this is contingent on the ability to translate and read the codes. The specific language that the car uses is referred to as OBD. This stands for On Board Diagnostics. OBD is a language that uses numeric codes to inform the mechanic what is wrong with the vehicle. If using an ASE master technician, they will have a specific device that is able to tap into the car’s code and tell them where to find the issue with the vehicle. You can bring the vehicle in, and we will be able to inspect the vehicle with any issues it may have.

check-engine-light-1

The Numeric Codes it has

Once the device has been plugged into the vehicle, a numeric code will be displayed on the screen. This code is used in order to tell the mechanic what is wrong with the vehicle; so that troubleshooting issues becomes easier. Many times the vehicle will tell the owner there is an issue that needs to be addressed before it becomes a huge problem. It does this by setting off the check engine light when the car is first turned on. This light can indicate simple to very complex issues with the engine.

Why Regular Maintenance is Needed

Inspect the Tires Regularly in the Winter

When you own a vehicle, you will want to keep it running in the most efficient condition possible. The most important thing you can do is to go to regularly scheduled maintenances. This will allow us to inspect the vehicle for any parts or components that might be causing an issue with the vehicle. We can have them repaired quickly to help get your vehicle back to being safe and reliable. Along with regular inspections by us, there are also some things you can check on the vehicle yourself. Make sure to check the tires on a regular basis. This is important because the tires are the only part that has direct contact with the surface of the road. Check the inflation of the tires, the tread depth, as well as the overall condition of the tires. By doing this, you can help make sure your vehicle is able to drive no matter when you might need to use it.

tire-repair-2

Check the Inflation of the Tires

When you inspect the tires, the first thing you should do is check the air inflation. This is important because the tires should be properly inflated in order to rotate efficiently. If the tires are over inflated, it can increase the chance that they pick up sharp objects or debris on the roadway. Tires that are under inflated will have a better chance to blow out, as the tire does not rotate properly. Poorly inflated tires can also result in poor fuel mileage for your vehicle. This is because the vehicle will have to use more fuel and power to rotate the tires efficiently. If you notice that one or all of the tires need air added, it could be an indication of a leak. Make sure to bring the vehicle in and we can inspect the air pressure in the tires for you.

The Tread Depth is Important

When you inspect the tires, also remember to check the tread depth. The tread is another important part of the tires. This is what helps to keep traction on the surface of the road when you drive. Without good tread, the vehicle could slide or skid on the road. Checking the tread can be quick and easy. Get a penny and place it upside down in the groove of the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, then the tread is too low. If you are unsure of the proper tread amount, you can also bring the vehicle in. We can inspect the tires for you, to ensure the appropriate amount of tread is there. If there is an issue, we can advise you on the options you have.

The Overall Condition is Important

The tires will also need to be in proper condition. Check for any bulges or puncture marks you might see on the tires. This will help prevent any sudden issue you have with the tires. By noticing an issue at the first sign, you can have the tire repaired or replaced. This can help to make your vehicle safe and reliable when you drive.

Signs of an Alternator Problem you Should Be Aware of

Alternator problems are fairly common. You will probably have some type of problem with your alternator in the lifetime of your vehicle. The charging system on your vehicle plays an essential role in everything electrical.

auto-repair-9

How the Alternator Works

An alternator’s main purpose is to maintain the battery.Power is sent via the engine drive belt, or serpentine belt. This is why it is so important to keep the belt tight and replace it when needed. When you are driving your vehicle with all the lights, windshield wipers, and the radio on, it uses a lot of electrical power. If all you had were a battery all of this electricity usage would drain the battery in a matter of minutes. The battery should be charged so your alternator works.

Signs of A Problem with the Alternator

It can be very tricky to diagnose these problems without any tools. Battery problems often seem like alternator problems and vice versa. You will notice squealing from the belts. This will indicate an issue that needs to be fixed asap.

How to Check Alternator Voltage

Bring the vehicle in when you notice an issue with how it starts. Doing so can help keep it operating correctly and as long as possible. If you ignore an issue, you risk further damage to it over time. Proper inspections must also be done for the vehicle. You spend a lot on a car, so it only makes sense you want it to last as long as possible.

Poor Heating from Your Vehicle

Depending on the symptoms, there are various reasons why your heater might not be working. It is important to bring the vehicle in as soon as possible so we can inspect it for the source of the issue. Having the heating system working efficiently in your vehicle is important for the overall comfort for you and your passengers. By bringing the vehicle in at an early sign of an issue, you can help prevent further damage to the parts and under the hood.

auto-repair-6

Heat Not Being Produced

If you notice that heat is not being produced, make sure to check the coolant level of your vehicle. If the coolant level is low, air may become trapped in the heater core. Smooth coolant flow through the heater core is critical for heat output. The heater core is usually located behind the dashboard. This is the heat source for your vehicle’s climate control system.

The Engine Temperature Gauge Increasing

If your temperature gauge is showing higher than normal temperatures, there could be a restriction in the cooling system. A defective thermostat typically causes this. It can be stuck in a closed position or other restrictions. Be careful not to overheat the engine and do not wait to take care of cooling system problems. This can end up doing more damage to your vehicle in the long run.

If the Engine takes longer than normal to Warm Up

If your vehicle is slow to develop adequate heat when the engine is started from cold, or the engine take a long time to warm up, try to notice the temperature gauge. The engine should reach operating temperature, approximately the middle of the gauge, after about six to eight minutes of running. If the temperature gauge needle always remains in the bottom third of the gauge, it is likely that the cooling system thermostat has failed. Bring the vehicle in and we can test the gauge to ensure it is working properly.

Other Issues that Might cause the Problem

If you are certain that the cooling system is functioning normally, it is possible that the source of the problem is in the heater controls. Poor heater operation may be due to heater controls that are not functioning properly. Climate systems usually operate using cables, vacuum, or electronic signals and actuators. No matter if the heater is producing less heat, or no heat at all, make sure to schedule an appointment with us. We can inspect the heating system of the vehicle. If you notice the temperature gauge that increases quickly, it could indicate a faulty part. To help keep the radiator and engine working properly without the risk of overheating, bring the vehicle in. This can help to provide you with a safe and reliable ride.

The Benefits Synthetic Oil Has to Offer

When you change the engine oil in your vehicle, you have a lot of choices, including the use of synthetic oil or conventional oil. Knowing what the benefits are of both oils can be beneficial when you are deciding which one is right for your vehicle. Others actually have the ability to increase the fuel mileage for your vehicle by using special advanced lubricants.

oil-change-1

The Benefits of Synthetic Oils

This oil has lubricants that help it to last longer. This helps you prevent engine wear in several ways. It will keep the oil from becoming pollutant with the regular contaminants as well. With time dirt and debris will do damage to the oil. Synthetic oil is designed to help prevent the issues that normal oil has. You can check what type of oil is best for your car by looking at the owners manual. Never put in different oil without consulting us first.

Few Oil Changes would be Needed

Synthetic oils are less apt to break down. This means that many synthetic oils do not need to be changed as often as conventional oils. The more durable properties of synthetic oil also mean that your engine is protected well through the whole service interval.

Better Condition of the Oil

As conventional oils break down, they often leave deposits on engine components. This is sometimes referred to as sludge or scaling. Although the properties of synthetic oil are definitely superior, conventional oil will protect the engine of your vehicle. The most important thing you can do to keep your vehicle running smoothly is to follow the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals.
