How the Alternator Works

An alternator’s main purpose is to maintain the battery.Power is sent via the engine drive belt, or serpentine belt. This is why it is so important to keep the belt tight and replace it when needed. When you are driving your vehicle with all the lights, windshield wipers, and the radio on, it uses a lot of electrical power. If all you had were a battery all of this electricity usage would drain the battery in a matter of minutes. The battery should be charged so your alternator works.

Signs of A Problem with the Alternator

It can be very tricky to diagnose these problems without any tools. Battery problems often seem like alternator problems and vice versa. You will notice squealing from the belts. This will indicate an issue that needs to be fixed asap.

How to Check Alternator Voltage

Bring the vehicle in when you notice an issue with how it starts. Doing so can help keep it operating correctly and as long as possible. If you ignore an issue, you risk further damage to it over time. Proper inspections must also be done for the vehicle. You spend a lot on a car, so it only makes sense you want it to last as long as possible.
